SUMMARY:The Code-a-Thon, Improving Student Engagement through Community Co
 ding
DESCRIPTION:S. Charlie Dey and Je'aime Powell (Texas Advanced Computing Ce
nter (TACC)), Boyd Wilson (Omnibond Systems LLC), and Linda Hayden (Elizab
eth City State University)\n\n"Learning by Doing" also known as Active Lea
rning is a hands-on, experiential approach to learning that involves activ
ely engaging in tasks or activities to acquire knowledge and skills. TACC
has been incorporating "Learning by Doing" into introductory advanced comp
uting topics termed Code-a-thons. This approach has greatly increased stud
ents' knowledge base in advanced computing through problem solving, debugg
ing, and implementing. Three major student outcomes from our code-a-thons
 have been:\n\n * Increased Retention and Understanding\n * Ski
 ll Development\n * Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving\n\nCode-a-t
hons have promoted a more engaging and practical learning experience that
encourages learners to become active participants in their own education,
leading to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of scientific com
puting. We will discuss the TACC Code-a-thon model: the benefits and detai
l our implementation, and share the real world projects used during our co
mmunity coding events and feedback from our students.\n\nTag: Education, S
tate of the Practice\n\nRegistration Category: Workshop Reg Pass\n\nSessio
n Chairs: Evguenia Alexandrova (Hartree Centre, STFC; Science and Technolo
gy Facilities Council (STFC)); Scott Lathrop (University of Illinois Urban
a-Champaign); Julie Mullen (Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), L
incoln Laboratory); and Nitin Sukhija (Slippery Rock University of Pennsyl
 vania)\n\n
