SUMMARY:Performance Engineering for Graduate Students: a View from Amsterd
 am
DESCRIPTION:Ana Lucia Varbanescu (University of Twente, University of Amst
erdam) and Stephen Nicholas Swatman (University of Amsterdam, European Org
anization for Nuclear Research (CERN))\n\nHPC relies on experts to design,
implement, and tune (computational science) applications that can efficie
ntly use current (super)computing systems. As such, we strongly believe we
must educate our students to ensure their ability to drive this activitie
s, together with the domain experts. To this end, in 2018, we have designe
d a performance engineering course that, inspired by several conference-li
ke tutorials, covers the principles and practice of performance engineerin
g: benchmarking, performance modeling, and performance improvement. We de
scribe the goals, learning objectives, and structure of the course, share
students feedback and evaluation data, and discuss the lessons learned. Af
ter teaching the course five times, our results show that the course is to
ugh (as expected) but very well received, with high-scores and several stu
dents continuing on the path of performance engineering during and after t
heir master studies.\n\nTag: Education, Heterogeneous Computing, Reproduci
bility, State of the Practice, Sustainability\n\nRegistration Category: Wo
rkshop Reg Pass\n\nSession Chairs: David P. Bunde (Knox College); Sushil K
. Prasad (University of Texas at San Antonio); Satish Puri (Missouri Unive
rsity of Science and Technology); Apan Qasem (Texas State University); and
George K. Thiruvathukal (Loyola University, Chicago; Argonne National Lab
 oratory (ANL))\n\n
