SUMMARY:Localization of Gamma-Ray Bursts in a Balloon-Borne Telescope
DESCRIPTION:Ye Htet (Washington University in Saint Louis)\n\nMulti-messen
ger astrophysics combines observations from multiple instruments to study
transient astrophysical phenomena, many occurring at seconds-level timesca
les. To identify and precisely localize these events in the sky, current s
ystems often search through extensive sensor data, requiring resource-inte
nsive computation to achieve results on the timescale of the events themse
lves. We seek to reduce computational requirements so as to perform real-t
ime event localization with limited computational resources suitable for a
n orbital platform.\n\nThis work studies the performance of a computationa
l pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization
aboard the Antarctic Demonstrator for the Advanced Particle-astrophysics T
 elescope (ADAPT), a balloon-borne prototype for a space-based gamma-ray ob
servatory supporting multi-messenger observations. ADAPT observes gamma-ra
y Compton scattering, then uses the pipeline to combine information from m
ultiple photons to identify a GRB's source direction. We identify, model,
and measure key uncertainties, then deploy instrumentation and computation
al improvements to reduce them, substantially improving localization accur
 acy.\n\nTag: Performance Optimization\n\nRegistration Category: Workshop R
