SUMMARY:Introducing Prefetching and Data Compression to Accelerate Checkpo
 inting for Inverse Seismic Problems
DESCRIPTION:Sandro Rigo, Thiago Maltempi, Marcio Pereira, and Hervé Yvique
l (University of Campinas); Jessé Costa (Pará Federal University); and Gui
do Araujo (University of Campinas)\n\nRemote Time Migration (RTM) poses su
bstantial computational challenges, demanding large memory and extended pr
ocessing times. Our RTM implementation processes three-dimensional fields
on multiple NVIDIA GPUs using the Revolve algorithm for checkpointing. How
ever, transferring data between the host and GPU memory introduces a bottl
eneck.\n\nWe introduced a checkpoint prefetching mechanism to overcome thi
s, anticipating memory transfers from host to GPU. Additionally, we integr
ated GPU data compression using the cuZFP library to reduce data transfer
sizes further. The experimental results demonstrated significant performan
ce improvements, achieving a speedup of 1.98x - 2.53x in our benchmark dat
aset. Prefetching + compression techniques together could reduce host-to-G
PU memory transfers by up to 16x.\n\nTag: Artificial Intelligence/Machine
